The FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP, developed by The FLORA OF VIRGINIA PROJECT, serves as the definitive catalogue of the plants indigenous to Virginia. Catering to various environments from wildflowers along roadsides to trees deep in the Appalachian hollows, the app offers users a tool for precise species identification.

Building upon the exhaustive data from the FLORA OF VIRGINIA publication released in 2012 by The FLORA OF VIRGINIA PROJECT in collaboration with esteemed organizations like the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia Native Plant Society, and others, this app encapsulates detailed information on nearly 3,200 plant species native to or naturalized in Virginia across close to 200 families.

Functioning without dependence on an internet connection, The FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP allows users unrestricted access to its comprehensive database regardless of their location.

Employing a fusion of information from diverse ecological datasets alongside its own, this app offers insights into moisture levels, light exposure, invasiveness indicators, and rareness rankings - with prominence given to habitats and ecological characteristics of native species. Users can navigate this data through Full Dichotomous Keys or a user-friendly Graphic Key.

The app boasts various features including original illustrations and photos, a botanical glossary, range maps, county filters for location data, sorting options based on scientific names, common names, genus names, and family names. Furthermore, botanical assistance and an extensive reference library enhance its usability.

Established in 2001, The Foundation of the Flora of Virginia Project aims to modernize the Flora Virginica initially published in 1739 using John Clayton's data. The culmination of this effort was the release of the FLORA OF VIRGINIA in 2012, followed by the introduction of the initial version of the FLORA OF VIRGINIA APP in 2017. The ongoing commitment of the project involves continual updates to keep abreast with current scientific standards and user requirements.
